Empowering wellness together

A celebration of women’s health at The Floating Hospital

On Saturday, March 9, we celebrated our bi-annual Women's Wellness Day at The Floating Hospital's flagship Long Island City clinic. Our spring event bloomed with joyful activity. Staff, volunteers, donors and partners came together to help make self-care a priority for women and girls. We offered a range of services and educational opportunities, including mammograms, cervical cancer screenings, HPV vaccines, spa treatments, beauty services, workshops and giveaways of clothing and personal care items.

“Know Your Status” HIV testing events at The Floating Hospital

The Floating Hospital recently hosted a "Know Your Status" event to promote HIV testing and awareness. The most recent in an ongoing series, was a huge success, with 70 participants aged 25-85 attending. HealthFirst and the Aids Center of Queens County (ACQC) were among the community supporters who joined us. ACQC provided on-site testing for HIV, and we were thrilled to see a great turnout from Jacob Riis’s senior program members. We also had the pleasure of welcoming Emeka Iloegbu, a public health scientist specializing in Clinical Microbiology and Hematology and Hepatitis C education trainer from the Hepatitis C Mentor and Support Group, who led engaging workshops alongside our Floating Hospital staff. Aside from free HIV and Hepatitis C testing, we held a range of activities and workshops to inspire people to make positive choices that will benefit their health and their communities. We recognize that HIV still impacts the LGBTQIA+ community disproportionately, and we understand that there is often a stigma surrounding testing. That's why we partner with other community organizations to reach those most at risk and least likely to receive vital information and services. We are always grateful for their support.   More…

From the ship's Log: Where salty breezes blow

1945: The man pictured on the left is Hollis S. Spotts, who was in charge of activities onboard. However, it's not his role but his wristwatch that holds an incredible story of bravery and quick thinking. Two years before this photo was taken, a chilling shout of "Man overboard!" pierced the air. Throughout the day, a mother had been seen balancing her one-year-old baby on the ship's rail, despite repeated warnings from a deck nurse and a girl scout mariner to keep the child safely in her arms. Ignoring their advice, the unthinkable happened: as the ship approached the dock, the baby tumbled overboard, plunging twenty feet into the river below.

Without a second's hesitation, Hollis Spotts leaped into the water. Miraculously, the baby had fallen clear of the ship and an adjacent tug, unharmed. Spotts grasped the child and, battling the river's swift currents, both were eventually rescued. The child emerged without a scratch, much to the relief of her father, who had witnessed the entire heart-stopping moment from the dock.

In a touching gesture of gratitude, the father presented Spotts with a watch, engraved and significant, to replace the one lost in the heroic rescue. This watch, worn by Spotts in the photograph, symbolizes more than just time—it represents a life saved, a daring act of heroism, and the deep appreciation of a family forever changed by his courage.
