Candy Cane Lane

A beacon of holiday spirit at The Floating Hospital

Candy Cane Lane marked its fifteenth year of spreading holiday cheer to New York City families, a tradition that has become the heart of our winter season. From December 11th to 15th, our community center was transformed into a holiday haven, welcoming families into an atmosphere of warmth, generosity and fun.

This past year, our dedicated partners and friends contributed more than 7,000 gifts, which were distributed to the 1,176 adults and children joining us to make merry. The gifts, from toys and books to essential winter clothing, were more than just items; they represented the community's compassion and support for those facing life's hardships.

As New York City tackles the diabetes epidemic, The Floating Hospital’s work continues

In the face of the ongoing diabetes epidemic in New York City, elected leaders and city officials have joined forces to strategize. There is a widespread appetite to confront this public health crisis head-on. The Floating Hospital's position as a provider to vulnerable communities places our skilled team at the nexus of this challenge.

The Floating Hospital a guiding light in healthcare and support for vulnerable groups, remains at the forefront of preventive healthcare, particularly attuned to the distinct needs of its patients living in the city’s homeless shelters and other unstable housing. Dr. Shani Andre, MD, Chief Medical Officer and EVP of Clinical Administration, is a vocal advocate for the significance of diabetes prevention and the necessity of proactive care within our patient community.

From the ship's Log: Where salty breezes blow
1939 image of policeman surrounded by happy kids

1939: Look at this man’s smile. The ship always had at least two officers onboard and the department would assign officers recovering from trauma themselves, for whom the sea air would be beneficial. Such was the case with Patrolman Joseph Cerra, of the Bedford Avenue Precinct (Brooklyn). Seven months earlier, he was working strike duty when a suspicious fire broke out and while responding he collapsed of a heart attack and was administered the last rites. Thankfully he seems well recovered here, appreciating life and enjoying the high spirits of the kids around him. Now look at his smile again.
